How the Pictionary word generator works
Tap New word to get a random word that is fun to draw. The generator shuffles all 329 words, so you will not see the same word twice until the deck is finished. Narrow it down with categories, choose a difficulty, and use the timer and scoreboard to run the whole game from one screen.
How to play Pictionary with this word generator
- Split into two teams and give each team paper, a whiteboard or a tablet.
- The drawer taps Hide word, then New word, and peeks at the card.
- Start the timer. The drawer sketches while their team shouts guesses. No letters, numbers or talking.
- If the team guesses before time runs out, give them a point and pass the phone to the other team.
- First team to 10 points wins.
Choosing a difficulty
Easy
Everyday things with simple shapes: cat, sun, pizza, umbrella. Perfect for kids and warm-up rounds. See the full easy Pictionary words list.
Medium
Familiar but trickier to sketch: kangaroo, telescope, waterfall, firefighter. This is the sweet spot for mixed groups.
Hard
Compound ideas and actions such as "northern lights", "sleepwalking" or "vending machine". These reward clever drawing over artistic skill.
Drawing tips that help your team guess faster
- Start with the big shape, then add one detail that makes it unique: a trunk for an elephant, steam for a volcano.
- Draw a small scene around the word. A fish is easier to guess in water.
- Use arrows to point at the important part, and cross things out to say "not this".
- For phrases, draw the words one at a time and hold up fingers to show which word you are on.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Pictionary word generator?
It is a tool that picks random words for you to draw in a Pictionary-style game. It replaces the card deck, so you can play anywhere with just paper, a whiteboard or a drawing app.
How many words are there?
There are 329 words across seven categories: animals, objects, food, nature, places, actions and people. Each word is tagged easy, medium or hard.
What makes a good Pictionary word?
Good words are concrete and recognizable: things you can picture instantly, such as a giraffe, a volcano or a toothbrush. Abstract ideas are fun for experienced players, so we put them in the hard level.
How long should each round be?
Sixty seconds is the classic choice. Try 90 seconds for hard words or younger players, and 30 seconds for a fast lightning round.
Can I use this with the official board game?
Yes. Use it when you have run out of cards, want different categories, or want to play without the board. This site is independent and not affiliated with Mattel.
